Prince William, the grandson of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, married his girlfriend Kate Middleton at a grand ceremony on Friday, becoming the British monarchy’s new golden couple and future heirs to the throne.
They were pronounced man and wife by Archbishop of Canterbury Rev. Rowan Williams at Westminster Abbey.
Only about 2,000 guests – from royalty to celebrities – were privileged to enter the Abbey to witness the nuptials, the biggest royal wedding since Prince William’s parents tied the knot there three decades ago.
British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, former British Prime Minister Sir John Major, Singer Sir Elton John, former England football captain David Beckham and his wife Victoria, and film director Guy Ritchie were among the guests.
William-Kate union enthralled millions who gathered in London and hundreds of millions of people who watched the event worldwide on television.
After the marriage service, William, dressed in the scarlet uniform of the Irish Guards, and Kate, wearing an ivory and lace gown, were taken in an open-topped 1902 State Landau carriage for the procession, to Buckingham Palace.
The same carriage was used by Prince William’s parents – Prince Charles and late Princess Diana – for their wedding in 1981.
Thousands followed the royal couple to the Buckingham Palace, while many more greeted them outside the abbey, and along the Mall up to the Palace, waving paper flags and cheering and shrieking.
The Royal Air Force flew past the palace as William and Kate, surrounded by the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, and Kate’s parents, greeted large crowds waiting outside. A reception was held at the Palace later in honor of the royal couple.
Prince William has been given the official title of the Duke of Cambridge by the Queen, while Kate will carry the title of Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.
